"I think sonically I really wanted to lean into the stuff that I grew up loving, that I still love to this day. I wanted to make sure that I was being really vulnerable and honest with my articulation in this album [...]."
"Silence Between Songs" is the sophomore studio album by Madison Beer released on September 15, 2023, by Epic Records and Sing It Loud. Madison began working on the album shortly after her debut album, Life Support (February 2021), was released and continued until early 2023.
Silence Between Songs is mostly a pop and psychedelic record, but it also features elements of 1960s soul music. While recording the album, Beer drew inspiration from a variety of musicians, such as the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Zombies, and the Turtles. Over the course of almost three years, the album was produced by a number of people, including Madison Beer herself, Leroy Clampitt, One Love, Fred Ball, and James Francies. Beer describes the sound as being vulnerable and honest.
Compared to Beer's earlier works, the lyrics of Silence Between Songs have a more mature theme and center on relationships, mental health, love, and heartbreaks. Critics gave the album positive reviews, with many praising Beer's strong vocals and thought-provoking lyrics. Some people thought the album's songs were all remarkably similar.
Background[]
Madison Beer's highly anticipated second album has experienced a tumultuous journey since its conception. Initially, Beer had planned to release both her debut album, "Life Support," and her sophomore album in 2021. A day after Life Support was released, on February 27, 2021, Madison disclosed that she had already begun work on a new album.[1] However, unforeseen circumstances led to multiple delays.
"You know, COVID messed me up so much timeline-wise, that Iām really confused all the time about when, exactly. But I want to say I started writing it right before COVID, in 2020. We did some sessions and we made some songs. And I would say around two or three of those songs ended up making it onto the album. There are songs from six months ago, mixed in with songs from around three years ago."[2]
After a Dropbox hack, which happend at the end of 2021, there was a significant leak of several songs from her upcoming album. In addition to the leak, Beer faced challenges in collaborating with her writing team, due to scheduling conflicts during her Life Support tour. As a result, the album's release was pushed back to 2022. Further complications arose, leading to the album's release being delayed once more to 2023.
On August 4, 2022 Madison posted a picture of a blurred whiteboard on it. She later gave away that it indicates the tracklist.[3] On December 3, 2022 Beer wrote that she's been adding and changing tracks on the album and that a whiteboard picture is coming "soon soon".[4][5][6] On December 14, 2022 Madison tweeted that she recorded the final session for the album.[7][8]
On January 9, 2023 Madison confirmed that the album will have two moods, shaking ass and crying.[9]
On March 17, 2023 Beer replied to a fan via Twitter that there are going to be 12, 13, 14 or 15 tracks.[10] She later revealed that it won't be 12.[11] A few days later on March 19, 2023 Madison responded to a video that her favorite song of the album is track 3 and 5.[12] On April 10, 2023 Madison said that track 8 is a really emotional track and revealed that Showed Me (How I Fell In Love With You) is track 9.[13][14]
In May Madison revealed that it won't take much longer for the tracklist to drop.[15] On May 31, 2023 Beer finally announced the album on social media with the release date of September 15, 2023.[16] After the announcement of her sophomore album, Madison's webstore updated with a countdown to June 2 for the album preorder.[17]
On June 2, 2023, "Home To Another One" was released and in the music video of the song, you could see a magazine called "SBS" standing for Silence Between Songs.
Beer described the sound as being very different from Life support. There will be no "bops" on the album and is aimed to mostly consist of ballads. According to Beer, the most emotional tracks on the album are: "King Of Everything", "Ryder", and "At Your Worst".
On August 8, 2023 a tracklist which was missing letters was posted on twitter.[18] A day later the complete tracklist was finally shared via Madison's Instagram.[19][20] The same day Beer shared the original whiteboard with the tracklist from May 3, 2022, August 2, 2022 and the final from December 13, 2022 on it.[21] On August 11, 2023, Madison shared a new cover for the album, initially announcing it as an alt. cover but then confirming it will be the cover on all streaming platforms as well as physical formats.[22][23] Days later, Madison went live on Instagram and clarified that the vinyl and CDs ordered before the new cover was announced will still have the original artwork.[24] In the same livestream, Madison expressed that she was not fully satisfied with the original album cover, stating that she didn't feel like it represented the album to the fullest.[25]
On August 18, 2023 the fifth single Spinnin was released. At the end of the month Beer shared snippets of the song via her Instagram.
On September 7, 2023, Madison's team announced that they will be hosting a listening party in Los Angeles, California.[26] In order to be invited to the event, you had to create a TikTok using the song "Spinnin" and then send the link to Madison's official site. The selected fans would have the opportunity to exclusively hear the album before the official release.
Madison finally released the album on September 15, 2023, after much anticipation from fans.[27] The album received overall favorable reviews by critics. On October 8, 2023 Silence Between Songs was the #1 album on iTunes in the UK.[28] On October 9, 2023 The Spinnin Tour was announced.[29]
Silence Between Songs became a Grammy-nominated album on November 10, 2023 for the 66th Annual Grammy Awards. The album was nominated in the "Best Immersive Audio Album" category.[30][31]
On November 30, 2023 Madison performed songs of the album on VEVO.
Deluxe Edition[]
On April 28, 2023 Beer stated that she isn't working on a deluxe version of the album and hasn't made one yet.[32] In an Instagram livestream Madison reacted to the rumors about her already planning a deluxe version of the album, to which she replied that she would love to make one in the future, but hasn't started yet.[33]
On August 9, 2023, Madison participated in a Twitter Space and expressed her admiration for the musical composition "Shampoo", and expressed her interest in its potential release as a deluxe version or single in the future.
On September 4, 2023, Madison confirmed on an Instagram livestream that she's working on a Deluxe version of the album, however, it is not known which tracks will be included on it or when she is planning to release it.[34] On September 30, 2023 Beer confirmed that she is considering making a deluxe for the album.[35][36] In an interview in September 2023, Beer explained that she wants to do more upbeat song and confirmed again, that she's been thinking about making the deluxe or an EP.[37][38] On October 20, 2023 Madison shared a picture of her and Leroy being in the studio after a fan asked how the deluxe is going.[39]
On December 14, 2023, Madison confirmed on Twitter that she was working on a deluxe again, but also hinted at the possibility of it being a EP instead stating āthat has not been officially decided yet, so we will see.ā[40] A day later she said she was indecisive whether it would be an ep or a deluxe version.[41] On December 17, 2023, Madison beer uploaded a post to Instragram, potentially hinting at the possibility of the unreleased track ā11 11ā, on the album on the second slide. [42]
On January 4, 2024 a fan asked if Beer forget the deluxe or ep to which Madison answered with "don't be silly" sharing a video of her in a studio.[43]
On February 7, 2024, Madison said in an instagram livestream that "Make You Mine" as well as another single might be tied to the deluxe version of the album.[44]

Possible intended Songs[]
Album Title[]
"I got to a point where I just hit the fan quite literally and [...] I just made a choice like I'm either gonna fix my life or I can't live like this, so I chose to start working on myself mentally and [...] start taking my mental health really seriously and I feel like that's where 'Silence Between Songs' was come up with because, you know I was like in between the silence between songs, in between the noise was where I really learned who I was [...] [when I'm] not always distracting myself. That's where I figured out that I can potentially get better and like things can change in a positive way."
Cover Artwork[]
With the announcement of the release date of the album on May 31, 2023, a cover from the "Home To Another One" photo shoot was revealed. She later confirmed it will be the cover on all streaming platforms as well as physical formats.

Critical Reception[]
Critics praised the albumās dreamy and introspective sound, highlighting Madisonās emotive vocals and the lush production. The blend of pop, dream pop, and indie elements resonated with listeners. Some reviewers felt that the album lacked cohesion, with certain tracks standing out more than others. They appreciated the experimentation but wanted a stronger thematic thread.[61] Beats Per Music wrote "some tracks do run the risk of sounding samey in terms of production, the main strengths of this album lie in Beerās powerful voice and transparent lyrics". Melissa Kacar called the albums sound "so grand and cinematic" and praised "Spinnin" for her lyrical and vocal strength. NME called out that "thereās one too many generic, string-laden ballads, and a stop-start feel to the record, a frustration given how enlivening its highs are." and rated it a 3 out if 5 stars. However, Sound In Review recommended to give that album a listen, accept it as a model for what creative, emotionally nuanced, and most importantly, genuine chill pop music can be. It called the album a 4 out of 5. A positive review was also given by 5 Finger Review, which called the album a "future classic in musicās rich tapestry". On February 22, 2025, the Spectrum rates the album "one of those albums that I never knew I needed to listen to, but now I canāt stop listening to it. From start to finish, this album just hits for me. [ā¦] I think Madison Beer deserves more attention than she currently gets as her lyricism and musical tones are something special.".

The first look at the album tracklisting was on August 8, 2023, when Madison's team shared a video on their Instagram and Twitter accounts. In this video, Madison can be seen writing down the tracklist of the album on a whiteboard.[64][65] The titles had several letters missing except for the already released songs. This was likely made on purpose so that fans could make up what the titles were themselves. The video had a blur effect, so that it wouldn't completely clear to see what's written on the whiteboard.
The day after, on August 9, 2023, Madison released the full album tracklist to the public.[66] She also posted another whiteboard photo to her twitter featuring two early versions of the tracklist.[67]
